Love Being Called Dog Mom White Pekingese T-shirts White
So my husband and I came from two different worlds. He grew up in a very small town (250 population) with a dad who somehow didn’t bring home that much from working at the packing plant. When he and his two siblings grew old enough to watch out for themselves, his parents went to community college to try for better jobs but that ended up not working out either. Generations of his family are farmer/working poor-ish. And when he was 15, his mother took the three kids and left his father in their family home his parents had purchased when my husband was three years old. He was very wounded by the divorce, being the middle child peacekeeper, though he acknowledged that they struggled a lot to get along. His parents remained wounded by the divorce as well, and couldn’t really be in the same room with each other until more recent years. I grew up as the only child in an upper middle/lower upper class family in a small city of 100,000 population. I was given a great deal of attention, traveled with my parents, was given most everything I wanted, but also expected to work hard — and since school was easy for me I was enlisted from a very young age to help my father with home improvement projects from mechanics in the garage to handing him nails when he was redoing the kitchen floor. My mom had a heart condition and I helped her schlepp laundry — actually I did a good portion of the family’s laundry since I had a playroom in the basement right next to the laundry room. I folded towels and linens and learned to iron. I thought everything was practically perfect even up through the August before I turned 15 when we took a trip to Canada and camped. September 7, my mother was admitted to a psychiatry floor and we didn’t speak to her for the 10 weeks or so she was there. She was told we never came by, called or inquired after her even though the psychiatrist spoke to my dad about her condition once or twice. Meanwhile we were told she wouldn’t see us. Even when I skipped school to go to the hospital and screamed for her from the front desk hoping she would hear me, and insisted that she may have a problem with my father, but she’ll talk to me, I was escorted out and told she was not taking my visits or calls either. She moved in with a friend after she was released, thinking we had abandoned her. She never quite believed that we did try to see her, or if we did, it wasn’t hard enough. I supposed we should have taken legal channels but it didn’t occur to dad. She was by then terminally ill from her heart condition and took her life before I turned 17. She invited me to a party that was going to be at her friend’s country house. She told me that I would know quite a few people there and her advice to me was to come to the party as she thought I might meet a nice guy there. I was hesitant as I was on the shy side, but she said that I could come up with a friend if I wanted to. I reluctantly went to this party. When I walked in, I did see some familiar faces that I hadn’t seen in a while. Then, my eyes met with this guy that looked familiar to me. I saw that he was looking at me, too. We started talking and we realized that we had met at another party three years earlier under almost the exact same circumstances. We were both invited to that first party by different friends. We hit it off instantly, secluded ourselves from the crowd and just sat and talked for about three hours. At the end of that evening, he asked me for my number. I gave it to him and waited in anticipation of getting a call from him…I NEVER got that call! Jump ahead to three years later and I am now at this party face to face with this guy that I initially liked three years earlier – the guy that seemed to like me, talked to me for hours, took my phone number and said he’d call me, but never did! Just before he was about to leave, he said to me “Do you still have the same phone number from three years ago?” My response was “Yes, why?” He then said “I still have your number from when I first met you. I’ll call you.“ I looked at him and said “Sure, that’s what they ALL say!” His response was “This time, I mean it!” He DID call me about a week later. He asked me out for the following Friday, to which I said yes. We then got together again the next Saturday. We started dating each other exclusively. She invited me to a party that was going to be at her friend’s country house. She told me that I would know quite a few people there and her advice to me was to come to the party as she thought I might meet a nice guy there. I was hesitant as I was on the shy side, but she said that I could come up with a friend if I wanted to. I reluctantly went to this party. When I walked in, I did see some familiar faces that I hadn’t seen in a while. Then, my eyes met with this guy that looked familiar to me. I saw that he was looking at me, too. We started talking and we realized that we had met at another party three years earlier under almost the exact same circumstances. We were both invited to that first party by different friends. We hit it off instantly, secluded ourselves from the crowd and just sat and talked for about three hours. At the end of that evening, he asked me for my number. I gave it to him and waited in anticipation of getting a call from him…I NEVER got that call! Jump ahead to three years later and I am now at this party face to face with this guy that I initially liked three years earlier – the guy that seemed to like me, talked to me for hours, took my phone number and said he’d call me, but never did! We literally reconnected just like the first time we had met; we found a quiet place to talk, we even remembered what we spoke about three years earlier, we got along really well and I felt that there was chemistry between us. Then, it happened. He told me that he had to leave because he was the driver and the friends he came up with wanted to leave. I was so disappointed. Just before he was about to leave, he said to me “Do you still have the same phone number from three years ago?” My response was “Yes, why?” He then said “I still have your number from when I first met you. I’ll call you.“ I looked at him and said “Sure, that’s what they ALL say!” His response was “This time, I mean it!” He DID call me about a week later.
